Leadership’s definition really changes from person to person. It all depends on whom you ask, actually. To some folks, leadership skills can just be one’s ability to deliver through his people, or it can also be the art of obtaining the very best from people. However, you define leadership, though, it has been subjected to several myths over the course of time.
The first myth of leadership is that leaders are born. This is false since all of us change between infancy and adulthood. Since all behavior in any man or woman is learned, the same principle applies to leadership and management, too. You are not born a leader; you learn to be one by acquiring the necessary leadership skills.
The second myth is that leaders need to have special job titles so they can be recognized as leaders. If a person agrees that a big portion of leadership involves being able to either control or influence his reaction to situations, then you can be in any role for that. This is not just something reserved for a senior management team in a corporation!
The third myth of leadership is that one first has to be in charge of managing a team before one can call themselves a leader. If you truly believe that leadership is just concerning getting the most out of others, it does not have to be limited to work. You can influence other people with whom you interact, and it mustn’t be exclusively at work.
The fourth myth is that you must have awesome oratory skills to lead. In fact, it is the other way around: A great leader has great oratory skills because he is able to get a crowd to rally around his cause.
The fifth myth about leadership is that it is in the hands of other persons to decide if one is a leader. In reality, leaders are frequently self-appointed, and other persons only figure into the proverbial equation after they have had experiences with you. That is when they decide, and only then, if you are a good leader or not. The decision to be a leader ultimately rests with the individual!
As you can see, leadership skills are defined differently by different people, which has led to leadership myths. Remember always that leadership is something that anyone can learn and something that one assumes, but is never appointed to.
